Like most artists, Shawna’s artistic ability revealed itself at a young age. In high school her work won many awards. Since she had multiple interests in art, theater, and psychology, she chose a liberal arts college (Saint Mary’s of Notre Dame) over an art school. Here she was fortunate to spend her sophomore year studying in Rome, Italy. Studying and living among the works of the great masters had a profound affect on her life and has influenced her work. Her paintings won awards, were featured in local galleries and sold to private collectors. After graduating Cum Laude with a B.F.A. degree, she embarked on a career in corporate video production and graphic arts. With the growth of the internet, this developed into multimedia design. After becoming a stay-at-home mom, she returned to her fine-arts roots and started KiwiCreative Photography and Design. Her focus has been children’s portraits and mixed-media drawings and paintings. She has always loved the human face and is continually fascinated by and striving to capture personalities in a static 2-D format. It is apparent how Shawna’s love of both painting and photography influence each other in her work. The framing of her portrait paintings are more like a video still or snapshot and her abstract and nature photographs have a painterly quality. She’ll never forget the first camera she got for her 10th birthday and how her mother scolded her for using a whole role of film on clouds instead of something “real!” Her Reflections series comes full circle in its abstract and spiritual qualities.
